April 2009 pages 3-4 Coding Brief:High Dose Rate Brachytherapy The delivery of high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy treatment involves the use of high-intensity radioelements with source radioactivity too great to allow manual handling. HDR brachytherapy, a technique that may be used in any anatomical site suitable for brachytherapy, is performed by using a remote after-loading device (also called an "afterloader"), which safely stores the radiation source between treatments and delivers the radioactive source directly into the patient during therapy.
