CPT Knowledgebase - Aug 1, 2019

A 67-year-old patient with a history of B-cell lymphoma of the abdomen has a bone marrow biopsy, but the specimen only yielded 11 metaphases that were identified for chromosome analysis. The report indicates 11 metaphases counted/analyzed and 2 metaphases karyotyped. Because the laboratory performed a chromosome analysis for a malignant hematological disorder with less than 20 cells, would it be appropriate to report code 88264? If yes, should modifier 52 be appended to code 88264?
