CPT Knowledgebase - Oct 26, 2017

CPT code 22853, Insertion of interbody biomechanical device(s) (eg, synthetic cage, mesh) with integral anterior instrumentation for device anchoring (eg, screws, flanges), when performed, to intervertebral disc space in conjunction with interbody arthrodesis, each interspace (List separately in addition to code for primary procedure), is described specifically as the insertion of an interbody biomechanics device with integral anterior instrumentation for device anchoring. However, the clinical example for code 22853 in the CPT 2017 Changes: An Insiders View, describes the use of a posterior lumbar interbody device, which is a different procedure. Why would code 22853 be reported for the clinical example provided given the discrepancy between the code descriptor for 22853 and the description of the procedure in the 22853 clinical example?
